Sparring by Katya Solovey

The second Saturday of March belonged to an international seminar with Katya Solovey from Ukraine. Katya is a multiple world champion in taekwondo and also in kick boxing. We took the opportunity to participate in this seminar and 11 of our members left early in the morning from Prague to Hana (Moravia).

The seminar was divided into three training blocks and of course the whole seminar was focused on sparring. Katya had two assistants with her - Viktoria Sokolovska took care of the translation into English and Dasha Korolovych was in the role of an excellent sparring partner to perform all the exercises. The seminar had an excellent cast as clubs from Poland, Slovakia and Croatia found their way to the Olomouc hall. The President of another International Taekwondo Federation, Grandmaster Paul Weiler and Croatian Master Slavko Jereb were present throughout the seminar.

From the very beginning there was no doubt that the seminar would be of great benefit. Although Katya has not competed for many years, it is not noticeable at all. The movement, insight and experience were evident from every perspective, but also from the words she used to comment on the exercises. A lot of emphasis was placed on proper distance, movement to and from the opponent and proper body positioning for kicks and punches. On the positive side, the whole hall was available for this seminar and compared to previous seminars there were no distractions from the parallel sports matches. Even though the hall is large, the 140 participants managed to fill it playfully.
