How was the instructors camp on Lipno?

Thanks to great responses from last year’s instructor’s weekend, I decided to participate as well. To train with other black belts, get to know each other, go for a trip, have a beer in the evening, sing… And in the morning have a wake-up bath in icy water of Lipno dam – isn’t it tempting?
This year, the date was the second weekend of March. The program was different due to a visit of grandmaster Hwang Ho-yong who led two blocks on Saturday evening and Sunday morning focused on theory and moral culture of Taekwondo. Friday and two Saturday blocks were led by Martin Svitek (Svíťa) and were focused on work with foot and balance, work with core of the body and use of these principles in self-defense. A trip to the inside of Lipno dam was planned for Saturday afternoon which did not end as expected. But about that later.

Because of work duties I went to Lipno with husband and wife Šestákovi on Friday afternoon, missing the first training. Because only supper and social evening, Přemek and me made the journey more pleasant by degustation of wine from Pálava region. Around 7pm we arrived and after shaking hands with our friends we started with the supper which is made in a form of buffet in Hotel Aktiv. There were several tasty meals so I would like to thank to cook Daniela for it. After meal, we were able to go to the sauna for a while before evening program. In the sauna we started to create poem for introduction of our TKD school. That was part of the upcoming program. The final version of Sonkal poem (after censorship of some verses, which were not suitable to white to Velešín School’s yearbook) was (it actually rhymed in Czech language):

Ode on Sonkal
Sonkal, Sonkal, Sonkal,
one would just stare at us.
Youngsters and beauties,
tell me who is more.
Join us friends
and drink with us.
And our boss is Ondra,
he is a big Anaconda.

The last verse was made up by Svíťa’s little son Matěj. We hope Ondra will forgive us but once it was said, we had to use it in our poem. The introduction of all participated schools is written in Velešín School yearbook. Next part of the program was knowledge crossword and free evening. After a while of chatting I silently went to bed to have a rest. I had no idea that I would be woken up by voices from the corridor: “Glo-ory, glo-ory, alleju-ujah, glo-ory, glo-ory, alleju-ujah, …” As Jakub Koutský sait in the morning: “When you can’t defeat them, join them”, I couldn’t sleep so I got up and went singing too. Music was provided by guitars of Anna Pösingerová and Milan Prokeš and few brave produced worse or better vocals. After few songs the tiredness won over everyone.
In the morning it seemed nobody will go for a bath in Lipno. So I went to bad again after the breakfast and I almost felt asleep when guys came to the room and said some people are going. I got up quickly, put on my swimming suit – I looked forward to it. We came to the beach, water was only around 5 meters from the shore, the rest od Lipno dam was covered with ice. We jumped into the water and most of us ran out very quickly and dressed up as fast as possible. Just the Viking Radek Hlavinka walked back to the hotel half naked. I am surprised that he didn’t get a flu.

Morning’s training was about work with body and self-defense. I agreed to do a partner for Svíťa, instead I was more a boxing bag. At least others had fun. And training of indomitable spirit is sometimes also needed. Otherwise I enjoyed the training very much and I hope others too.

After lunch, most of us went by car to the visit the dam. In the main building we separated into two groups. First one stayed in the cinema and the second which I was part of went to the hall by elevator. From there, sloped elevator leads to the machine hall. I think I heard the tour guides saying there used to be some problems with the elevator. First group that entered the elevator included Martin Svitek and his kids. One way should take quarter to three minutes, the tour guide should have let the people out in the machine hall and come back for another group. But after ten minutes of waiting we started to be suspicious, because no one came back. So, we sat on the stairs, make fun of what happened when suddenly alarm and voice saying: “personal elevator malfunction”. Our concerns were confirmed and we waited what will happen next. In the meantime there is a lot of time to start conversation with people we don’t know so well. One can always find some positives. After almost hour of waiting and few more alarms someone realized that maybe the personnel upstairs didn’t know what happened. And because we were locked downstairs, he climbed the fence and went upstairs to explain the situation. After a while he returned with the second guide. Only chance to get them out was to call someone who has keys from the cargo elevator. At least the rest of us was rescued since the guide came and we went back to the hotel. Unfortunately, without our trainer. The training started at four instead at two and Jaroslav Vomáčka took the role of the trainer. He showed us his experience with movement in matsogi. It was very interesting for me, one could see his great experience from the times when he trained Czech National Team. After a while the rescued party appeared in the door and the training continued under Martin Svitek.

Dramatic afternoon ended by arrival of local TV. They filmed part of the training and then we showed some patterns and board-breaking.

After the training the program continued with theoretical part. GM Hwang started his talk about Taekwondo, he covered the tenets and other topics from encyclopedia. His talk stopped when dinner was served and because most of the people would probably fall asleep after the dinner, he decided to continue in the morning.

After the dinner there was a group competition on guessing Czech proverbs from the pictures prepared by Jan Weidlich and Lada Oberriterová. I enjoyed the competition and I think our team plunged into the competing and desire to win was big. The rest of the evening was free program which was made more interesting due to power outage. In the atmosphere given by candle light I was forced to play the guitar although my fingers protested. But playing together with Anna Pösingerová (guitar) and Jaroslav Bartizal (violin) was very pleasant experience. Then we played few rouns of table-tennis. Great thanks to the owner of the hotel for letting us at the bar late. After he closed, we talked with few people in the basement corridor for a while and then went to bed.

Next morning we had a wake-up exercise and we went to Lipno. Again I tested the destiny – will I catch cold or not? I didn’t… Morning talk of Grandmaster after the breakfast was more interesting for me then the previous one. He talked about how Taekwondo is deformed by competitions. I recalled a debate between me and my fried. I said: “Hey, this isn’t correct way how you practice it.” And he replied: “Well but it wins on the competition, it looks stronger…” So I understand the Grandmaster that he doesn’t like when some people only do Taekwondo for winning the competitions.

Hopefully my article ends now. We had lunch, said goodbyes and went home. For me it was very intense weekend and I liked it very much. I think it was not my last visit to this event. I can just recommend.
