7.7.2015 / Seminar with Grand Master Choi Jung-hwa (IX. dan)

Wine, pickles and Taekwon-do

All three things in title belong for many years to royal city of Znojmo, even if Taekwon-do for approximately 20 years. After two years we went to Znojmo again and just as last time, goal of our visit was seminar with son of Taekwon-do founder, GM Choi Jung Hwa.
This time went only three members of Sonkal.

Local vineyards like sun, so the organizers prepared it for whole Sunday. Even though we were hidden in the shade of sports hall, the heat penetrated our doboks since first minutes. The seminar began with silent memory to general Choi Hong Hi. Although general passed away 13 years ago, his work lives on in every taekwondist.

The beginning of seminar was really sharp for 6th dan and higher, because nobody expected starting with Tong-il pattern. After thorough practise and explanation of historical legacy of first techniques, the seminar continued with part for all participants. We practised basic kicks with emphasis on front kick and proper use of body. Interesting part was hand technique drill led by GM Nicholls, after which nobody\'s dobok stayed dry.

Patterns were practised out of order, but nobody cared. Higher Dan\'s assisted with kicking practise on pads. The seminar went on with no lunch break, as it was originally planned, so it crushed our energy cover of our performances. So I even used my forgotten energy gel during small break. At the end of seminar we took a lot of group pictures.

Unfortunately the seminar had some negatives. It traditionally started late, because GM just usually comes late. What a difference between him and GM Hwang. Second negative was a poor plan for the seminar (if there was a plan at all) according to random skipping from one thing to another. I have to compliment GM Hwang\'s seminars again...

I see positives in many interesting philosophical thoughts, which GM Choi mentioned. Mostly the idea that if you know one movement really thoroughly, you know all other movements, because the basic principles are the same. And other benefit was to meet people from all of Europe. And that is a most valuable thing on the seminars.
