Science in Taekwondo and instructors´ seminar in Brno

I´ ve found few interesting scientific articles about Taekwondo recently and want to share few notes and links. Also I want to invite you to (not only) instructors´ seminar in Brno. Study, personal training and teaching of others is what is base of what I teach during seminars. I believe that searching for new informations and approaches and keeping open mind is good way how to enjoy Taekwondo deeply even after tens of years of practice and teaching. Don´t miss a chance to spent some time together discussing ways how to teach. Weekend is primarily dedicated to instructors, but also other Taekwondo practicioners are welcome.

1/ ADHD adolescents and taekwondo
Taekwondo has signficant positive outcome on selective attention compared to control group. Children in this study trained twice a week for 50 minutes. Altogether for year and half focusing on technical aspects and patterns. I think this is interesting stuff not only for advertising our activities. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30642062

2/ taekwondo improves cognitive functions in women above 65 years
Unfortunately they practiced 5 times a week. I cannot imagine it working here, but maybe someone else is.

3/ differences in physiological reactions in sparring and pad work
Pad work simulating real match closely correlates with sparring itself regarding heart rate, blood lactate and RPE (percieved intensity). But it has lower reactions in muscle damage and inflammation immune response. These are higher for more than 24 hours after sparring. Maybe we may think about doing sparring during camps just every other day. But these negative sounding words about damage and inflammation are part of adaptation to exercise. This is one of the topic I would enjoy to discuss with other instructors during our course.

4/ octacosanol supplementation in intensive weight loss
Intensive weight management is part of most martial sports (sumo is fine, I believe). Regular side effects are worsening of lipid spectrum and decrease in performance. Octacosanol (part of some plants and dietary suplement) decreases these side-effects and may be of interest for example for national team.

5/ sport weight management knowledge
Survey (in different taekwondo style and different country) shows that approaches to weight management are very often (from part of both coach and competitor) of dangerous outcomes. I believe improving our knowledge about food and diet would be great topic for future seminars. Our students trusts us and this may be one way how to deeply positively influence their lifes.
