19.7.2008 / Summer camp of Taekwon-do Academy Slovakia

Go for east

Beep, beep, beep, booom. No it is not start of new Sonkal comics, but soundtrack of one Saturday morning when my alarm clock started to beep at 5 A.M. Human beings doesn’t wake up at such a hour, but taekwondists have some special characteristics :o) So we left to Brno then through czech-slovakia borders to Lom nad Rimavicou.

Invited by Karol Molnár, who was chief organizer of taekwondo summer tra

ining camp in Slovakia Sonkal trio (Ondřej Vrábel, Vladimír Švanda and Pavel Bareš) traveled from Prague. Two members of Ge-Baek Hosin sool taekwon-do school joined us few km out of Prague (Lada Oberreiterová and Honza Weidlich). Then we brought Martin Beránek in Brno and crossed borders. Our last supporter was Martin Svitek, traveling Slovakia for a while before camp started. Journey longer than 500 km went through village Hriňová where 17 km long climb on road started. At the top of hill our final destination appeared – Lom nad Rimavicou, temporal home for more than 70 taekwondists.

We checked our accommodation and surroundings and than took part in first training. It was led by international instructor Ri Kum Chol (VI. Dan), who teach taekwondo in Slovakia with his wife (she came later because of illness) for few months. Training was dedicated to basic hand and foot techniques with great atmosphere created by instructor Ri. We did some calisthenics for chest and shoulder muscles at the end of training. Brand new thing for us is strengthening for forearm and palm (Sonkal students will enjoy it soon :o)

Evening training is focused on patterns from Chon-ji. Despite of fact that it is „just“ patterns training no one save energy and practice for 100%. Instructor asks taekwondo theory questions between patterns and false answers are rewarded by press ups. We had energy only for shower (it wasn’t easy to persuade shower to work in normal temperature) and then cadaverous posture in bed (it is kind of funny in Czech, maybe in English also? – translator :o) ) .

Next day started with „warm-up“ at 7 A.M. which was skipped by some of us older than 30 to survive next two trainings. First training started with pairs stretching, massage and then stepping practice. Then some sparring combinations including turning and jumping techniques. Whole training went in fast pace (nearly no breaks!!!), but we felt taste of Instructor Ri to teach as much as we can absorb. End of training dedicated to short, but intensive abdominal muscles training.

Black belts had basketball match in the afternoon and so had color belts. Then stretching and special techniques in many variations with such intensity and so many good advices that lot of use were surprised what are able to jump. This nearly 3 hours long jumping marathon was finished by leg exercises that we going to remember forever :o)

Evening training again dedicated to patterns divided into color belts and black belts group. Two IV. Dan holders finish this training with royal tul Moon-moo. Questions are again asked and are interesting even for instructors. Color belts then started to practice step sparring, but strong storm broke electricity in whole building. Svíťa saved evening shower – who doesn’t ever experienced showering with head-lamp doesn’t know what I am talking about.

Part of us left camp at Monday morning to visit thermal springs Bešeňová. Other part did self-defense training and then also traveled west to meet rest of us in Brno. We took some McDonald food, shared our feelings (mainly about pain and soreness) and than traveled back to Prague.

We all thank to Karol Molnár for invitation and instructor Ri Kum Chol for great trainings. We hope to return next year maybe in bigger numbers.
